Man United is hopeful of securing a bargain, their ability to secure a £50 million deal for Frenkie De Jon has been set
With talks with Barcelona over a £50 million transfer, Frenkie De Jong might be on his way to Manchester United for a lot less than first thought.
United are said to have started discussions with Barcelona because they regard De Jong as the ideal replacement for Paul Pogba,
who was given a heartfelt send-off by the club when his summer departure was confirmed.
After working with De Jong at Ajax, new manager Erik ten Hag is a tremendous fan of the midfielder and is eager to reunite with him at Old Trafford.
Frenkie De Jong was said to be willing to shun offers and battle for his spot at Barcelona, dealing a blow to United.
However, executives are beginning to believe that a deal may be struck, and at a far lesser cost than previously anticipated.
Frenkie De Jong has been a member of Barcelona’s midfield since joining the club in 2019,
but the Catalan club has to balance the books to make further transfers this summer.
Xavi would prefer to maintain all of his assets in an ideal world, but their hand has been forced owing to financial difficulties.
Due to the priority placed on players like Pedri and Gavi, Frenkie De Jong may be forced,
to make a way for Barcelona to pursue targets like Robert Lewandowski.
And La Liga president Javier Tebas backed up this claim, claiming that the club will be unable to do business unless it sells.
And that will be welcome news to United, who have been tracking De Jong for some time,
especially after Ten Hag was linked with a move to the club.
Ten Hag will already be looking to include Donny van de Beek into his plans, and the two might rejoin at Old Trafford.
Frenkie De Jong and Donny van de Beek might reunite at Manchester United
In January, the 25-year-old joined the Goodison Park side on a six-month loan contract,
in order to gain more playing time and establish himself as a first-team regular.
Van De Beek had to spend the most of his time at Old Trafford on the bench,
since he was not considered by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
But, as the Dutch midfielder suffered with injuries throughout his time at Goodison Park,
what appeared to be the solution to his issues turned against him.
In the last six months, the midfielder has only played seven times.
Everton’s final game of the Premier League season was begun by the Nijkerkerveen native.
Unfortunately, the midfielder scored his first goal for Everton in a 5-1 defeat away at Arsenal.
On his Twitter account, Donny van de Beek wrote:
“Not the way we wanted to finish the season but we already reached our goal a few days ago.
“I want to thank all the players, staff and especially the fans who were there in the good and tough times.
Up the Toffees”
Now is the chance for the Dutchman to unite with Erik Ten Hag and rediscover,
the Ajax version of himself that drew the interest of Manchester United.
United need midfielders, and they need them now, with Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard’s contracts expiring this summer.
The club issued a statement expressing its regret for their departures and wishing them both the best of luck in their future efforts.
However, United’s management must be confident in De Jong’s abilities,
since they do not want to repeat the error they made with Pogba.
After being re-signed for a club-record amount in 2016, the Frenchman is leaving United,
on a free transfer for the second time.
They paid £89 million for him at the time, which is still a club record. But, regrettably,
for United, the amount spent on the World Cup champion is far larger.
When salary and bonuses are taken into account, Pogba has cost £200 million since his return in 2016,
and it’s fair to say it’s been a disaster. The midfield is a big weakness in United’s lineup, and Ten Hag must address it.
De Jong has already prospered under Ten Hag, and he has been supported to do so again,
even though he has yet to express a desire to leave Barcelona. However, given the current state of negotiations,
a reunion with his former boss may still be in the cards.
