Mesut Ozil career at Ferney met the same fate as his at Arsenal when the club decided to prematurely end his contract, allowing him to sign with another team as a free agent.
Mesut Ozil signed with Istanbul Basaksehir of Turkey’s premier division without wasting any time in looking for a new team.
After his dream transfer to Fenerbahce rapidly turned into a nightmare, the former Arsenal playmaker was left without a club. In January 2021,
Ozil returned to his old team after Mikel Arteta cut him from the playing group.
The 33-year-old was permitted to leave the Emirates early and signed a three and a half year contract with Fener. However,
after a mostly promising start in which he scored nine goals in 26 appearances, he was shunned following a dispute with the then-manager Ismail Kartal.
This summer, he was replaced by seasoned strategist Jorge Jesus, but the Portuguese quickly stated that the World Cup champion had no place at the team.
At his unveiling, Jesus said, “He had his time, his space.” “Nobody can take away his magnificent history in Turkey,” he said. He is a well-known athlete everywhere.
But I’ll be watching closely to see how the Ozil era ended. There is nothing particularly important about this scenario—not the coach Jorge Jesus,
not the player Ozil, not anything about any of the players. Fenerbahce is by far the most crucial factor in this situation, and it is from there that I develop both my ideas and the players that come to work with me.”
Ozil will now join Basaksehir after his contract was mutually cancelled on Wednesday. The neighbors of Fener in Istanbul were only established in 1990,
but they have since developed into one of the football heavyweights of Turkey, earning their first league championship in 2020.
After claiming there was no likelihood of an exit, Ozil and his representatives have quickly reversed course in response to his move.
The German’s agent, Dr. Erkut Sogut, stated in an exclusive interview earlier this year that his client had no plans to leave his favorite club and would instead stay and compete for his position.
“We all anticipate it. This is what we anticipate and will see, “Dr. Sogut stated. He still has two years left on his contract, so there is no danger that he will leave.
Concerning their disagreement, he continued: “I’m not sure what exactly was said between the coach and a few of the players. But this sort of event occurs frequently.
It is not rare for athletes to disagree with coaches on occasion.”
After enjoying periods around Europe during his illustrious career, Sogut has also hinted that Ozil plans to finish playing in the nation.
